The Karavanke/Karawanken region is perfect for various environmentally friendly winter activities. There are plenty of options for ski touring, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing.
The Karavanke/Karawanken region is a scenic mountain range between Slovenia and Austria. Explore the hiking trails, sport climbing crags, and via ferratas on both sides of the border. There are also numerous natural and cultural sites, plus several lakes, where you can spend a pleasant, relaxing day.
JULIAN ALPS 365 DAYS
You can visit Julian Alps all year round. Come for the first spring walks in the valleys or catch the snowy mountain peaks before the snow melts. In summer, hike to mountain pastures and conquer the highest mountains and freshen up in lakes and rivers. In autumn, you will be amazed by the wonderful colours of extensive forests and golden larch trees in the medium mountain region. In winter, give yourself up to winter sports or enjoy walking in snow-capped nature. In winter and in summer there are numerous world sports events while cultural, culinary, and ethnographic events are organized all year round.
Along the Juliana Trail, you won't conquer any of the alpine peaks. At the foothills of high peaks, the trail leads you along the edge of the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park.
The Slovenian Mountain Trail starts in Maribor, and runs across Pohorje and the Kamnik and Savinja Alps, the Karavanke Alps, the Julian Alps and the Slovenian Alpine foothills, then descends through the Karst region and finally finishes by the Adriatic Sea. The route is marked with traditional ‘Knafelc’ hiking trail markings (a red circle with a white spot), each marked with a number ‘1’ to differentiate it from other trails. It is the longest and the most popular transversal hiking trail in Slovenia, and originating in 1953, it is one of oldest in Europe and the world. There are currently 80 check points along the trail (mountain huts, summits, museums, etc).
The Slovenian Mountain Trail travels through the Jesenice area along the ridge of the Karavanke Alps from Stol to the check point at the Koča na Golici mountain hut, and then descends into the valley to the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana.

It connects five international footpaths, numerous natural and national parks in the Alps region, interesting tourist spots and the worlds of many diverse European cultures.
Stages 3 and 4 of the Purple Trail run through the Jesenice area, thus connecting the Julian Alps with the Allgäu region in Germany. Stage 3 takes visitors from Dovje to Koča na Golici mountain hut, and stage 4 continues to Prešernova koča mountain hut on Stol.
